Rudolph III held the Duchy of Austria only briefly, installed by his father Albrecht I while the elder Habsburg consolidated control over the German kingship following his deposition of Adolf of Nassau in 1298. The pfennig coinage of this period belongs to the broader tradition of the Vienna pfennig — thin, bracteate-style bracteates known as Wiener Pfennige — which dominated central European petty commerce through the thirteenth and into the fourteenth century.
Rudolph III died in 1307, a year after this issue's terminal date, never having ruled independently of his father's shadow.
