The style is characteristic of late 12th-century Friulian hammered coinage, with schematic rendering of drapery folds and facial features reduced to simple linear elements. Pellegrino II della Torre held the patriarchate during a period of intense conflict between Aquileia and the rising communes of Friuli, and his coinage reflects the institutional ambition of a church-state pressing its temporal authority hard against secular encroachment. The Patriarchate had held minting rights since the 10th century, but issues under Pellegrino II show a distinct effort to assert that privilege visually and economically across a fractious territory.
Bernardi 9 is among the scarcer attributable types of this reign, with surviving examples thin enough that die studies remain inconclusive on the full sequence of production.
