Ottokar II held Styria from 1260 until his defeat by Rudolf of Habsburg at the Battle on the Marchfeld in 1278, but these Oberzeiring pfennigs were struck during the earlier, more stable phase of his rule. Oberzeiring itself was one of the most productive silver mining centers in the eastern Alps during the thirteenth century, and the local ore supply gave Styrian pfennigs of this period a noticeably consistent fineness compared to contemporary issues from neighboring mints operating on imported metal.
