Beschrijving voorzijde Central field dominated by a Gothic shield bearing a rampant panther or lion, rendered in high relief in the crude yet expressive style characteristic of 13th-century Styrian bracteate-influenced coinage. The shield is set within a beaded inner circle, around which runs a partial Latin legend. The strike is irregular, as is typical of hammered medieval pfennigs from this period and mint.

Aanvullende informatie

Ottokar II acquired Styria in 1260 following the Battle of Kressenbrunn, which ended Hungarian control over the duchy and brought it under Bohemian rule. These small bracteate-style pfennigs were struck at Graz during that window of Přemyslid administration, ending abruptly when Rudolf of Habsburg defeated and killed Ottokar at the Battle on the Marchfeld in 1278 — though the Styrian issues ceased even before that, as Ottokar lost the duchy to Rudolf by treaty in 1276.
