Beschrijving voorzijde Mitred bust of a bishop in three-quarter facing view, turned to the right, with a pellet above the mitre. A crosier is depicted in the right field. The effigy is rendered in the bold, simplified style typical of late medieval episcopal bracteate-related coinage, contained within a beaded or plain inner circle. The irregular flan exhibits four pinched points at the cardinal positions, characteristic of the bracteate tradition of the Upper Rhine region.

Aanvullende informatie

Otto von Grandson — better known as a Savoyard knight and diplomat in the service of Edward I of England — held the Bishopric of Basel from 1306 to 1309 under genuinely contested circumstances. His appointment was a papal provision over local chapter opposition, and he never fully consolidated ecclesiastical authority before his death.

The Basel pfennig of this period was struck under the bishop's mint right, a privilege the see had held since the tenth century. Otto's tenure was short enough that documented output from his episcopate is sparse.
