Pfennig - Meinhard St. Veit

Meinhard II of Gorz-Tirol acquired Carinthia in 1286 as a direct reward from Rudolf of Habsburg, who needed a powerful ally to consolidate control over the southeastern Alpine territories following the defeat of Ottokar II of Bohemia at the Battle on the Marchfeld. The St. Veit mint — Carinthia's traditional ducal minting seat — resumed production almost immediately under Meinhard's administration, making this pfennig one of the earliest coinages struck under his Carinthian authority.
