Meinhard II acquired Carinthia in 1286 as a reward from Rudolf of Habsburg for his decisive military support during the campaign against Ottokar II of Bohemia — the same political settlement that effectively locked the Habsburgs into their long Austrian dominance. St. Veit an der Glan served as the ducal seat, and its mint produced the regional pfennig coinage that facilitated trade across the Alpine passes Meinhard controlled with considerable strategic jealousy.
