Lüthold II served as Bishop of Basel during a period when the see was caught between competing pressures from the Habsburgs and the expanding influence of the Zähringen successors in the upper Rhine region. His coinage rights were exercised at Breisach, then still under episcopal control — a jurisdiction that would be contested and eventually lost by his successors within a generation.
