Equestrian figure of the margrave depicted in right profile, seated upon a horse in a vigorous striding pose, rendered in the schematic Romanesque manner typical of Austrian 12th-century coinage. The rider holds what appears to be a sceptre or lance, with drapery and harness details suggested by incised lines. The horse's legs and body are rendered in a flat, stylised fashion consistent with hammered silver pfennigs of this era. A dotted or beaded inner circle frames the central motif, with subsidiary decorative elements visible in the field. The die work is characteristic of the Austrian mint output under the Babenberg margraves. |
