The Lords of Auffenstein were a ministerial family who held the lordship of Windischgrätz — modern Slovenj Gradec in northern Slovenia — as vassals of the Duchy of Carinthia. Konrad III's coinage rights derived from delegated comital authority rather than any independent sovereignty, making these small pfennigs the product of a genuinely local monetary franchise rather than a territorial mint in the institutional sense.
The Auffenstein line died out in the later fourteenth century, absorbed into Habsburgian consolidation of Carinthian lordships. CNA Ch36 remains thinly documented in circulation finds.
