Additional information

Johann II Senn von Münsingen governed the Bishopric of Basel during one of the most turbulent stretches in the diocese's medieval history, including the devastating plague years of 1348–1349 that decimated the Rhine valley population and severely disrupted regional trade. Small silver pfennigs of this type circulated as the workhorse denomination of local commerce — markets, tolls, minor church dues — and their low surviving numbers today reflect heavy use rather than low mintage.
