Pfennig - Henry V

Henry V of Austria — not to be confused with the Holy Roman Emperor of the same name and period — ruled the duchy during a stretch when denarius coinage across the German lands was fragmenting rapidly into regional types. The Austrian pfennigs of this era derive from the broader bracteate-adjacent tradition but retain a struck fabric on both sides, distinguishing them from the thin uniface pieces proliferating further north. CNA B30a places this among the earliest attributable Austrian ducal issues, a classification that took scholars well into the twentieth century to settle.
