Frederick the Fair — Friedrich der Schöne — was Duke of Austria and Styria before his disputed claim to the German throne drew him into open conflict with Ludwig IV of Bavaria. Captured at the Battle of Mühldorf in 1322, he spent years imprisoned at Trausnitz Castle before an extraordinary arrangement saw him co-rule nominally alongside Ludwig, one of the stranger constitutional compromises of medieval German kingship. Styrian pfennigs of this period circulated across a fragmented monetary zone where regional ducal issues competed directly with episcopal and civic coinages.
The Graz mint's output across this span shows notable die inconsistency, a product of intermittent production rather than continuous striking.
