Frederick III (later Frederick the Fair) struck these small bracteate-style pfennigs during a period when he shared rule over Austria with his brothers under a contested co-duchy arrangement following their father Rudolf I's death. The Viennese pfennig of this period was widely circulated in regional trade networks extending into Bohemia and Hungary, where Austrian silver maintained a strong commercial reputation despite the political instability at the ducal court.
