Eberhard II served as Archbishop of Salzburg from 1200 to 1246 — an unusually long tenure that coincided with the height of the Archbishopric's territorial and political power in the southeastern Alpine region. His episcopate saw persistent friction with the Bavarian dukes and complex entanglement with the Hohenstaufen imperial court, circumstances that made independent coin production both a practical necessity and a political statement.
