Additional information

Eberhard II of Salzburg was among the most politically aggressive archbishops of the thirteenth century, spending much of his tenure in open conflict with both secular lords and the papacy. The Friesach mint — located in Carinthia rather than Salzburg proper — had been a dominant silver-striking center since the mid-twelfth century, and these thin bracteate-style pfennigs circulated widely across the eastern Alpine trade routes into Slovenia and Hungary. CNA Ca25 places this type firmly within the later phase of Eberhard's minting activity, distinguished from earlier Friesach issues by subtle die characteristics catalogued by Luschin.
