A small tower or turret appears on each side of the arcade, with a ring or annulet at the top center of the arch, alluding to ecclesiastical architecture. Rann — modern Brežice in Slovenia — was one of several mints operated by the Archbishopric of Salzburg in the Styrian March during the early thirteenth century, exploiting silver from the eastern Alpine mining regions. The joint attribution to Eberhard II and Leopold VI reflects the complex political entanglement between the archbishops of Salzburg and the Babenberg dukes of Austria, whose territorial interests overlapped uncomfortably across the Sava valley.
Eberhard II held the see from 1200 to 1246, making him one of the longest-serving archbishops of the period. The bracteate-influenced fabric of these thin pfennigs was standard across the region by this point — a consequence of the same silver supply that fed the Friesacher pfennig boom.
