Berthold V, a Bavarian nobleman from the House of Andechs, held the patriarchate during one of its most politically turbulent stretches — his tenure overlapped with the broader collapse of Andechs family power following the 1208 murder of King Philip of Swabia, in which members of his family were implicated. Aquileia's mint at Windischgrätz operated as part of the patriarchate's assertion of temporal authority in the contested march between the Holy Roman Empire and Hungarian-influenced territories to the east.
