Berthold V ruled the Patriarchate of Aquileia during a period of intense friction between the patriarchs and the Holy Roman Emperor, with the see functioning as much as a territorial lordship as an ecclesiastical office. His coinage from Gutenwerth — a mint island in the Drava river in modern Slovenia — reflects the patriarchate's reach into the eastern Alpine marchlands, where Aquileia competed directly with the bishops of Bamberg and the emerging Babenberg dukes for regional authority.
