Berthold V, a Bavarian-born member of the Andechs dynasty, held the Patriarchate of Aquileia from 1218 until his death in 1251 — one of the longer tenures in the see's medieval history. Gutenwerth, an island in the Wörthersee in Carinthia, operated as a minting site under patriarchal authority during his early rule, placing this issue geographically well north of Aquileia itself. The patriarchate's minting rights in this period were frequently contested by local secular lords, and Berthold spent considerable energy defending ecclesiastical prerogatives against Carinthian and Friulian nobility.
