In the upper-left and lower-right quarters, crescent moons are placed with their horns pointing outward; in the upper-right and lower-left quarters, six-pointed rosettes or mullets serve as decorative charges. No legend or border inscription is present. The overall design is typical of 13th-century Friesacher-type pfennigs issued in the Patriarchate of Aquileia, rendered in crisp relief on an irregular hammered flan. |

Berthold V, of the Andechs-Meranien dynasty, held the Patriarchate of Aquileia during one of its most turbulent stretches — his tenure overlapped with the bitter conflict between Frederick II and the papacy, forcing him to navigate shifting allegiances with considerable diplomatic cost. Gutenwerth, the island mint site on the Gurk River in Carinthia, was a secondary production center for the patriarchate, and coins struck there tend to differ subtly in fabric from the main Aquileia issues.
