Berthold V, the Andechs-Meranien duke who held the Patriarchate of Aquileia from 1218 until his death in 1251, minted bracteate-style pfennigs at Gutenwerth — an island fortification in the Drau river in Carinthia that served as one of his principal administrative centers. The Patriarchate's coinage during this period was deeply entangled with the ongoing contest between the bishops of Bamberg and the secular Carinthian nobility for influence over the region's mint rights.
