Berthold IV of Merania issued these bracteate-style pfennigs during a period when the Andechs-Merania dynasty was under intense political pressure following the 1208 assassination of his brother Philip of Swabia — an event that brought lasting imperial suspicion onto the family. The duchy itself was a geographically fragmented entity straddling the eastern Alpine approaches, never a compact territorial power, which complicates attributing circulation findspots to any single economic zone.
CNA Ch19 remains the standard reference for this type, though die studies suggest production across multiple years within the bracket rather than a single sustained issue.
