Obverse description Facing bust of the bishop, crowned with a mitre surmounted by a cross, set between two stylised towers with arched doorways. The effigy is rendered in a schematic Romanesque style, with the face depicted frontally in low relief. Two inverted letters, S and N, appear above the central figure in the upper field. A decorative border of pellets or beading frames the composition along the coin's irregular periphery.

Additional information

Berthold II von Pfirt served as Bishop of Basel from 1248 until his death in 1262, a period in which the bishopric exercised considerable independent mint authority in the Upper Rhine region. The HMZ 1#226a attribution places this piece within a tightly defined group of episcopal bracteate-style pfennigs from that diocese, though surviving examples are sparse enough that die linkage studies remain incomplete.
