| Obverse description | Facing bust of the bishop, crowned with a mitre surmounted by a cross, set between two stylised towers with arched doorways. The effigy is rendered in a schematic Romanesque style, with the face depicted frontally in low relief. Two inverted letters, S and N, appear above the central figure in the upper field. A decorative border of pellets or beading frames the composition along the coin's irregular periphery. |

Berthold II von Pfirt served as Bishop of Basel from 1248 until his death in 1262, a period in which the bishopric exercised considerable independent mint authority in the Upper Rhine region. The HMZ 1#226a attribution places this piece within a tightly defined group of episcopal bracteate-style pfennigs from that diocese, though surviving examples are sparse enough that die linkage studies remain incomplete.
