Bernard II, Duke of Carinthia from the Spanheim dynasty, issued this pfennig during a period when the mint at Heiligenkreuz operated as part of a broader fragmentation of coinage authority across the Alpine duchies. The Spanheimers were losing their grip on Carinthia by mid-century — Bernard II died in 1256 without a male heir, ending the dynasty's rule entirely and transferring the duchy to Ottokar II of Bohemia.
The Heiligenkreuz attribution within CNA Cq62 places this among the bracteate-adjacent thin-flan issues characteristic of southern Austrian minting in this period, where dies wore rapidly and no two surviving specimens strike identically.
