Bernard II ruled Carinthia from 1202 until his death in 1256, and his bracteate-style pfennigs from the Heiligenkreuz mint belong to a period when the duchy was navigating persistent pressure from its Babenberg neighbors to the north. The Heiligenkreuz issues are distinguished within the CNA sequence by their relatively thin fabric — a consequence of the regional minting practice that favored broad, shallow striking over the heavier dumpy flans common in contemporaneous Styrian output.
