Bernard II ruled Carinthia from 1202 until his death in 1256, and the Heiligenkreuz issues produced under his authority represent a concentrated moment in the fragmentation of minting rights across the Alpine duchies during the early thirteenth century. The Cistercian abbey at Heiligenkreuz — founded in 1133 by Margrave Leopold III — held minting privileges that intersected with ducal authority in ways that remain contested among specialists working this series.
CNA Cq66 is among the thinner-flan bracteate-influenced pfennigs of the Austrian regional sequence, struck at a time when the Vienna mint had not yet consolidated regional production.
