Bernard II ruled Carinthia from 1202 until his death in 1256, and his issues from the Heiligenkreuz mint reflect a period when Carinthian coinage was asserting a distinct regional identity against the dominant influence of the Friesacher Pfennig system. The Heiligenkreuz pieces are struck on noticeably thinner flans than the Friesacher standard, a deliberate departure that affected weight norms across the duchy's monetary output for decades.
