Albrecht II — known as "the Lame" due to a paralysis that left him partially incapacitated from 1330 onward — nonetheless governed Austria with considerable administrative effectiveness throughout this period, relying heavily on his brother Otto IV for military matters. The Vienna pfennig issues under his rule continued the thin, bracteate-style fabric that characterized Austrian petty coinage throughout the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, struck at the ducal mint operating under tight municipal oversight.
Die production for these issues was inconsistent, and surviving examples frequently show off-center strikes or double-striking — a known characteristic of the type, not a deficiency unique to individual pieces.
