Beschrijving voorzijde A heraldic panther passant to the right occupies the central field, rendered in bold relief in the characteristic Viennese bracteate style. The beast is depicted with open jaws and raised forepaw, its body filling the inner circle of the flan. The design is enclosed within a raised inner border, with the characteristic irregular, pinched flan edge typical of late 13th-century Austrian pfennige. No legend is present.

Aanvullende informatie

Albrecht I inherited Austria in 1282 when his father Rudolf of Habsburg partitioned the duchies of Austria and Styria between Albrecht and his brother Rudolf II — the first time the Habsburgs formally held these territories as hereditary possessions rather than imperial appointments. The partition was contentious and Rudolf II was effectively sidelined within two years, leaving Albrecht sole ruler. These bracteate-style pfennigs circulated during a period of aggressive territorial consolidation, before Albrecht's election as German king in 1298 following his defeat and killing of Adolf of Nassau at the Battle of Göllheim.
