Otakar II of Bohemia acquired Styria in 1260 following the Battle of Kressenbrunn, but these pfennigs were struck across a wider window that includes the preceding years under his guardianship — a period of contested succession following the Babenberg extinction. Styrian bracteate-style pfennigs of this weight class circulated alongside Friesacher pfennigs, the dominant regional currency, and were frequently debased by local lords exploiting minting rights granted under the Imperial system.
Otakar's assassination in 1278 at Dürnkrut ended Přemyslid control of the duchy entirely.
