Ptolemy I did not assume the title of king until 305/304 BC, meaning this piece was struck when he still ruled Egypt as satrap — a deliberately ambiguous position he had held since 323 BC following the partition of Alexander's empire at Triparadisus. The shift to royal coinage was partly a response to Antigonus Monophthalmus declaring himself king in 306 BC, forcing the other Diadochi to reciprocate or appear subordinate. Bronze issues of this transitional moment are poorly documented in many collections, and the Lorber corpus remains the primary reference for resolving attribution questions among early Ptolemaic bronzes.
