Reverse description At the centre of the reverse, a cross pattée is depicted with a distinctive trefoil ornament at the end of each limb, all contained within a beaded inner circle. The four quarters formed by the cross are left open within the inner circle, creating a bold, symmetrical design characteristic of Viking-age York coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the inner circle, referencing the city of York as the place of issue. The lettering is arranged in four groups and rendered in the angular, loosely spaced style typical of Danelaw pennies of this era.
