Obverse description Within a raised inner circle, a bold cross moline occupies the central field, its splayed terminals forming a distinctive decorative device characteristic of Viking-Age York coinage. Encircling the inner circle is a broad outer legend in large Anglo-Saxon majuscule characters, reading retrograde in the Viking manner. The coin is struck on an irregularly shaped flan typical of hammered pennies of the period, with a slightly beaded border visible along the rim.
