| Obverse description | Facing crowned effigy of King Henry I, rendered in the stylised Anglo-Norman manner, with a broad, frontal face and large eyes. The king wears a jewelled crown adorned with pellets, and pellets also appear to either side of the bust. A circular Latin legend surrounds the effigy, reading the king's name and title. The design is characteristic of the bold, somewhat hieratic style of early twelfth-century English hammered coinage. |
