Obverse description Armoured and diademed bust of Harthacnut facing left, rendered in the bold, somewhat schematic style characteristic of late Anglo-Saxon die-cutting. The king's effigy is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the royal diadem indicated by a simple band. A surrounding Latin legend names the king, interrupted by the typical letter-forms of the period. The portrait occupies the central field with a pronounced chin and visible mail or scale armour on the shoulder.
