Obverse description Draped bust of King Harold I facing left, wearing a helmet adorned with a fleur-de-lis ornament, with two pellets flanking the helmet. The king's robes are depicted with decorative pellet-filled segments at the shoulder. A Latin legend surrounds the portrait in the field, reading HAROLD REX, rendered in the angular Anglo-Saxon lettering characteristic of the period. The overall style reflects the Ringerike-influenced engraving of late Anglo-Saxon coinage.
