Reverse description A highly stylized ecclesiastical design featuring two schematic facing busts representing the apostles Simon and Judas, rendered in a primitive linear style typical of Frisian ecclesiastical coinage of the late 11th century. The busts are depicted side by side within a beaded inner circle, with architectural or decorative elements separating them. The surrounding Latin legend DOGGINGVN, introduced by a cross pattee, refers to the mint of Dokkum, an important ecclesiastical center in Frisia.

Additional information

Egbert II of Meissen was granted the March of Frisia by Henry IV in 1068, but his rule there was turbulent and brief. He was killed at Dokkum in 1076 — the same town where Boniface had been martyred three centuries earlier — during a conflict with the local Frisian population who resisted his authority. Coins bearing his name were almost certainly struck within that narrow window, making the type a direct artifact of a failed imperial appointment on the North Sea frontier.
