| Beschrijving voorzijde | Plain central field bearing a small cross pattée at centre, surrounded by a raised inner circle or ring, with the royal legend disposed around the periphery in angular Anglo-Saxon letterforms. The inscription reads + EΛDVVEΛRD REX, identifying the issuer as King Edward. The design is characteristically austere, eschewing a portrait effigy in favour of the purely epigraphic style common to early tenth-century English pennies. The lettering is bold and slightly irregular, consistent with hand-engraved working dies of the period. |
