Obverse description Diademed bust of King Ecgberht facing right, rendered in the bold, stylised manner characteristic of early ninth-century Anglo-Saxon coinage. The effigy breaks the inner beaded circle, emphasising the regal presence. A Latin legend encircles the bust within the outer border, reading the king's name and title. The portrait is executed in low relief with strong linear features typical of Canterbury workshop production.
