Henry of Verdun's episcopate in Liège coincided with the Investiture Controversy at its most destabilizing — he was a creature of imperial appointment, elevated by Henry IV rather than by canonical election, which placed the bishopric squarely in the reformist crossfire. Coinage rights in the Prince-Bishopric had been confirmed by imperial grant, and these deniers were struck under authority that Rome was simultaneously arguing was illegitimate.
