| Obverse description | Facing bust of Archbishop Henry Murdac turned to the right, holding a sceptre in the right hand; a mullet accompanied by two pellets appears in the inner right field. The effigy is rendered in the bold, schematic style characteristic of mid-twelfth-century English hammered coinage. A Latin legend reading the archbishop's name and title runs around the periphery within a beaded border. The flan is irregular in shape, as is typical of hand-struck ecclesiastical issues of the Anarchy period. |

| Obverse lettering | θ HENRICVS EPC (Translation: Archbishop Henry) |
| Reverse description | A cross pattée imposed over a saltire fleury fills the reverse field, the floriate arms of the saltire extending boldly between the arms of the cross pattée to create an eight-pointed ornamental composition. This elaborate cruciform design is characteristic of the Ornamented group of Civil War pennies struck in the name of King Stephen. A Latin legend naming the king runs around the border within a beaded inner circle, the lettering in the bold, somewhat irregular hand typical of provincial die-cutting during the Anarchy. |
