The effigy is rendered in a debased, provincial style typical of irregular civil war issues, with schematic facial features and abbreviated regal emblems. A partial circular legend surrounds the bust, though the lettering is often poorly struck and irregular on surviving examples. The overall execution reflects the breakdown of centralised mint control during the conflict between King Stephen and Empress Matilda. |

| Descrizione del rovescio | A lozenge with deeply incurved sides occupies the centre of the reverse field, with a star at its centre and a trefoil ornament at each of the four points of the lozenge. An annulet is placed in each of the four quarters between the arms of the lozenge. The moneyer's legend, reading + GODǷINE : ON : LIN, identifies the moneyer as Godwine operating at the Lincoln mint. The design is typical of the cross-and-ornament reverse types associated with the Stephen coinage of the civil war period. |
