Patrick, first Earl of Salisbury, struck coins in his own name during the anarchy of Stephen's reign — a period so administratively fractured that local magnates, bishops, and barons issued their own currency almost as a matter of course. His issues fall within the broader "Angevin" civil war coinage, minted in support of Empress Matilda's claim against King Stephen. The royal minting monopoly had effectively collapsed.
North 947 is among the rarer baronial types from this period. Survival rates are low; most examples show significant wear from the brief, chaotic circulation they saw before royal authority was restored under Henry II.
