Reverse description Reverse displays a voided short cross pattée at centre, with a quatrefoil or annulet ornament at each angle between the cross arms, consistent with the standard penny reverse type of the period. The cross divides the field into four quadrants, each decorated with pellets or fleur-de-lis motifs in a style characteristic of civil war-era provincial coinage. The surrounding legend, partially legible on the irregular flan, names the moneyer Aedelwine of Cardiff. The overall design follows the broad cross formula established under earlier Norman kings, here rendered with provincial vigour.
