| Obverse description | Diademed bust of King Ceolwulf II facing right, rendered in the boldly stylised Anglo-Saxon hammered tradition, with a prominent pellet-decorated diadem and elongated facial features characteristic of late 9th-century Mercian coinage. The bust is set within a beaded inner circle, with the royal legend arranged around the periphery of the flan. The portrait displays a draped shoulder treatment and a strong, linear nose and chin typical of the period. The inscription CIOLVVL F REX encircles the effigy, proclaiming the issuer's royal title. |
