| Obverse description | Diademed bust of King Ceolwulf I facing right, rendered in the angular, stylised manner characteristic of Mercian coinage of the early ninth century. The king's head is depicted with a simple diadem and rudimentary facial features typical of Anglo-Saxon hammered silver pennies. A circular legend surrounds the effigy within the coin's field, reading the ruler's name and title. The die engraving exhibits the bold, slightly crude workmanship associated with the Canterbury mint of this period. |

| Reverse description | Central design consisting of a large capital letter A with a central pellet at its apex, enclosed within a raised inner circle, a characteristic motif of the Group I coinage of Ceolwulf I. The geometric simplicity of the A type is rendered with clear, bold strokes consistent with Canterbury mint workmanship. The moneyer's name is inscribed in a circular legend surrounding the inner circle, filling the field to the coin's edge. The overall composition is well-centred and typical of the flan shape and style of early ninth-century Mercian pennies. |
