| Reverse description | The reverse displays a small cross pattée at the centre within a plain inner circle, a design characteristic of the Two-Line penny type struck at York under Viking rule. Surrounding the central cross, the moneyer's name is inscribed in the field in two lines of Latin lettering, reading + R ° ATHVL ° F OH ° NETR, identifying the moneyer as Rathulf. The outer border of the reverse, like the obverse, shows a beaded or plain rim, and the overall fabric of the flan is typical of tenth-century English hammered silver coinage. |
