Anlaf Guthfrithsson seized York in 939 after the death of Æthelstan, exploiting the weakness of the new English king Edmund and reversing nearly a decade of southern consolidation over Northumbria. His reign lasted barely two years before he died on campaign in 941, making any coinage attributable to him genuinely scarce by the simple arithmetic of his time in power. The raven type connects directly to Norse dynastic tradition — the bird carried deep significance for the Uí Ímair, the Dublin Viking dynasty from which Anlaf descended.
